From now on, when you get an exe... you dont have to scan it with software... why not head on over to Virus Total and scan it through a wonderfully designed web-gui.

Always remember that not every link you get from your friend is from him... perhaps someone stole his account... don't just assume what you are running is safe... not even if it's you're best friend in the whole world... scan everything.

what if its a big file? also, are viruses still really a problem? Also, as long as you don't use a resource hog, all controlling av like norton it would be quicker to use an installed av. Or of course you could just switch to plan9, like a sane person and never have computer issues again.

Well... yes, viruses are very much so an issue on the internet... while you may not see this there are individuals getting so called "owned" each and every day on messengers... perhaps if that unlucky person has 20 friends and 5 are in his family group, now you have 5 relatives to send files to and they may trust him... what if AVG doesnt detect them... Avast... what if there is only 1 that detects it... and even if it's not detected on virustotal, in may in fact still be an undetected virus... and considering a lot of people have nice gaming rigs because they want to play with all their friends a lot of people have Windows XP... or Vista, you could probably do a poll on your messenger list and laugh with results of all that Windows XP users... because i'm betting more than 85% would be either on that or Windows Vista... maybe even more, but this of course depends on who you hang around... i'm just stating the averages i've run across in my days... i've got "833" messenger contacts that all log on and off on a daily basis and i've asked them quite the questions, lol.

ah right. so virustotal uses pretty much every av about? right, that sounds pretty good actually. I haven't used windows as my main os for 3-4 years now so I'm pretty clueless about what virus are kicking about, If they don't affect me they dont exist :P.

pretty cool site away, i'm sure someone here will find it useful :)

I wasn't aware it was possible to have this many messenger contacts (assuming you are talking about windows live messenger).

Would you not need a lot of hardware to keep this running if it gets people (not even talking about a lot) using it. It took quite a long time to do one small image and it uses a queue which could get over loaded. The web interface has many limitations.

The problems with virus' can largely be solved with user education. I personally don't find it necessary to run anti virus software, but this could be a useful tool if I wanted to give a file a once over.

Yes. Most viruses need the user or some autorun file to open em, before they can install themselves and do any damage. So if users are educated in the proper manner, virus can't hurt em.
They can be manually removed too. You just need a good restriction removal tool, some registry edits and search and destroy virus files. THis would get rid of the nasty bch faster and better than AV. + you don't have to bear with slow booting time. :D
But thats just my opinion :p.

There are few things like if we need to click on any URL, then also a virus can attack our PC. It has happened the moment you click on any link your PC will be affected by viruses. What to do in this case?

User education is the solution, but we all know people tend to be stupid. So... we're fucked up.
