#1 Favorite brands of computers/laptops? on January 22 2009 19:29
I have noticed a heluva lot of people talking about new computers and those that lasted for the longest. I thought I would start a thread to ask people what brands, OS, etc they prefer.

I have 2 laptops:

1. Macbook Pro from 2006
Intel Dual core, 2ghz I think
2g ram
80g hd (I know, its always full)
Running Tiger OSX, not Leopard

I love this, it is my main computer. Anything I want to do is possible. I have XP loaded on to it as well in case there is a program I can't get for the mac, or serial number generator for a program I "stumbled across" on the internet. I have loaded a few games and what not onto it over the years. Most games now are released both for PC and Mac, so its not a problem. Battery still lasts a solid hour+ depending on what is running.

2. Compaq Presario from 2005
512mb of ram?
60g hd?
Running Ubuntu

I don't use this one very much anymore. Its still in great shape. I uninstalled XP about 6 months ago and learned a little linux. I mainly use it for playing around on the internet and feeling cool when I get into my programming moods. I don't really use it for anything else. Just my back up.

I don't have a desktop, but am thinking about getting one to run a linux server/media server for my xbox. We will see.

My brother just got an EeePC netbook. Tiny as hell but really tight. I want one now. Very limited in what you could do with it... well then again, it can do everything except video editing and gaming. I am really considering getting one in the near future, maybe after tax returns if the wifey allows it.

So what is everyone else running/looking to buy in the near future?

I don't really like Macs, the gaming isn't too great and it's pricey when you can get better PC specs for nearly half the price...

:D I want a netbook too, they are so nice.

Anyways, I recently bought a Gateway P-6831FX Laptop
CPU: Core 2 Duo T5450 @ 1.66GHz (Planning on upgrading it to +2.50Ghz)
RAM: 3Gb DDR2 800
GFX: nVidia 8800 GTS 512mb
HD: 250gb HD (SATA I think)
OS: Vista Home (will prob downgrade to XP)

I pretty much love this laptop, it'd be a lot better when I upgrade the processor :)

Then I built this one:

CPU: E6550 (2.33Ghz stock) @ 3.08Ghz
MOBO: ASUS P5Q
RAM: OCZ 4GB DDR2 1066
GFX: nVidia 8600GT 512mb
HD(s): 320GB SATA, 1TB eSATA
OS: XP SP3

Overall, I like whatever has nice specs and a decent reputation; plus there isn't any brand out there who is perfect.

That's not a bug, that's an unexpected feature

I have an old laptop, but I don't need a lot because I mainly play games and watch movies with my desktop. I just program in my laptop and play Diablo II:

Compaq Presario F754LA
CPU: AMD 2GHz
RAM: 1GB DDR2
HD: 160 GB SATA
GFX: nVidia GeForce 7000m (That's why I only play Diablo II here xD)
OS(s): WinXP and Debian Lenny (2.6.26-1-686)

I love Lucia (that's her name) and I don't think to cheat on her with another laptop... yet.

MacBook Pro ftw!
I also have a laptop from Dell. Core 2 Duo, 2.33 ghz. 2 gb ram.
My older laptop is HP, and it heats up really fast...and is loud and heavy. :(

I got my macbook pro for FREE. Otherwise I probably wouldn't have one. You know those websites where its like "Click here for a free laptop!!!" and then you click there and you find out you have to do like 20 offers to get it, and it just seems like a scam. They aren't scams. I think I ended up spending about $200 on miscellaneous crap offers and canceling them a couple days later. 3 months later, my macbook pro shows up in the mail.

I will say this, after owning one, I will definitely consider buying one in the future. But yes, they don't give you much bang for your buck, and they aren't good for much gaming.

yeah, well HP's with Intel processors should be good with heat. but mines got an AMD and it feels like its constantly on fire.
Also, It is heavy, but that is ok because its a 17" so i expected it.
