I'm curious as to what languages are known by ZI members. Besides English, I'm rather decent with Spanish and have recently started learning Mandarin Chinese. I learned Spanish through 4 years of high school and a few fluent Mexican friends. I'm using Rosetta Stone for Mandarin.

I speak only English, which I'm not to proud about. They tried to teach french when I was at school, all I know from that is a song about a cat named coca. I have German family as well but they speak perfect english so I've never needed to learn much, I only know important stuff like asking for chocolate/strawberry icecream.

I've been planning on actually learning Hindi next. If not, then I'll probably learn Russian.

Romanian as mother tongue, English first foreign language, I plan to get a Cambridge degree for it.

French they tried to teach me that for 4 years but nothing could stick to me

German well at the end of 8th class it was even better than English but during high school (now I'm 11 class) because i stopped use German on internet and between friends i forgot almost everything.

Conclusion: Romanian and English (shh it's about surviving not about being grammatically accurate when it comes to English ^^)

Mother tongue: Spanish.
Other Languages: English and Portuguese.
Languages I would like to learn: Mandarin Chinese, Japanese and Python.
Languages I tried to learn, but college projects didn't let me: Japanese, Esperanto and Python.

Also I'm developing a language for my personal use. Yes... I guess I'm a complete geek...

I know English perfectly.
I am fluent in reading French, but I can hardly understand it when spoken.

I just downloaded Rosetta Stone...I mean, bought it...and I am learning Spanish right now. After that Italian, then Mandarin.

I figure once I know both French and Spanish, Italian will be easy, as they are all based on latin.

EDIT: 3l...um, you want to learn Esperanto? Dude, that has NO use and was a completely failed attempt at a universal language. Good luck on the conlang though.

May the Winds be with you.

I speak English. I am fluent in Tagalog as well. Lived in the Philippines for a few years and picked it up as their English sucked and I couldn't talk to anyone. I am not a fluent in Tagalog now as I used to be when I lived there. I used to think and dream in it. Now I can understand and speak, but its tough and I have to think first before I speak.

Hey Swift...since I am learning spanish...do you think you could ask your wife (or maybe you know) if she can recommend any REALLY simple spanish books? Like a spanish equivalent to "See Spot Run" type thing? I know its random and you probably don't know any, but I am trying to get fluent as quickly as possible.

May the Winds be with you.

My native language is Spanish and my second one is English.
I used to be able to read Hebrew fluently but, couldn't understand half of the things I was reading.
I can read and understand a lot of Portuguese (written only).

That's not a bug, that's an unexpected feature

for example if u wana go and study in a specific country it helps better if u know the foreign country language (even there are few courses in english)

Also romanian is based on latin too ^^
Example:
Latin: Nescio quid maius nascitur Iliadae
Romanian: Se naşte ceva mai mare decât Iliada

It keeps you culturally diverse. If you visit another country and only speak your language, people will talk to you, but it will be hard to truly connect with someone if you can't speak their tongue. Not to mention, you look pretty badass when you tell people you speak 1 or 2 other languages fluently.

Also, learning foreign languages usually enhances your understanding of your native tongue.

Hmm, i'll ask but you're on the right path. You should start with KID books but I think you will be fine right now with rosetta stone as I heard that its a great program. I'll write back in a bit.

actually-- from what I heard. they store(rosetta stone) all of the language programs on the server and with the right skills you can download them for free.

I learned English reading hacking forums and translating some Chritmas Carol's chapters. I tried to translate Hamlet, but it's the hardest book I have ever read.
Also I understand spoken English because I watch series like Terminator, Big Bang Theory, Firefly among others without Spanish subtitles... I have to admit it was pretty hard at the begining...

Also I learned Portuguese because my father and my grandparents are Portuguese and they speak Portuguese very often. Although I had to study Portuguese grammar and pronunciation for 3 years.

I know Esperanto is useless, but I wanted to speak Esperanto with my friends xD

Everything you can learn is useful. Google's success is because it wants to know everything. Knowledge is power. Never forget that...

Shiny. Just the fact that you watch Firefly makes up for any gorram things you have done wrong. Infact, it makes you awesome...just as much as me. Between your V for Vendetta avatar and sig (I assume you read the book and not just the movie....the book is so much better) and you being a Browncoat, I am happy to say I share a community with you.

Browncoats rock.

xD Don't worry I'll fix it...
[Fixed :D I think I have an exceptional memory xD ]

Now I understand why everybody says that using always the root account in Linux is dangerous xD

And thank you about your comment, I'm glad to see another Browncoat Alan Moore Fan :) I read the book... Awesome book... The movie is also shiny, but in its own way... They are so different...
Also Firefly is the best series ever made... I really love it... I watched the movie in High Definition and it was orgasmic... The best orgasm I have ever had (just kidding xD)
